"Hark the Herald Angels Sing" in Refurbished Catherdral
St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth has a convoluted history. Originally starting as a smaller cathedral built in 1865, the foundation stone for a new, larger cathedral was laid in 1926. The onset of the Great Depression prevented the completion of the new cathedral, so the re-opening of the Cathedral in 1930 was actually a meld of the old cathedral’s entrance and nave with the newer cathedral’s sanctuary and transept.
Perth Architect, Peter Quinn, was awarded the massive work to unify the two cathedrals with aesthetic and architectural sensitivity, and has achieved this beautifully with the modern materials of steel and glass.
The steelwork is protected with Dulux Quantum FX in a dark grey to simulate micaceous iron oxide’s metallic lustre. The advantage of using Quantum FX in a public space such as St Mary’s, apart from its visual impact, is the long term durability and amazing resistance to marring and marking. Even graffiti (should that ever occur) is easily removed without affecting the finish.
Whilst Quantum FX is normally applied in shop (as you would an automotive coating, for example), the structural steelwork was erected and welded on site, necessitating spray application on site. This requires the specialised skills of an experienced two-pack spray painter, and given the nature of this historic project, also required patience and careful masking to protect the original building materials such as local sandstone. Minor surface defects (generally accepted as standard by the industry) were meticulously filled and sanded, and each layer of primer and intermediate coat carefully rubbed back before the next layer was applied to produce a finish of exceptional quality.
Jason Harris of AJC All Colour Windows, the artisan entrusted the job of applying Quantum FX, had his own fascinating history to tell, and this story explains why Jason’s labour of love for St Mary’s went much deeper than that of a standard paint job.
Jason’s devotion to his work was strengthened by his personal and life-long association with his parish church. In fact, Jason’s family have been parishioners of St Mary’s for several generations. Moreover, Jason’s uncle, great-uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather have all been maintenance painters for St Mary’s, and this long family history further inspired Jason to produce a job that is nothing short of sensational.
Perth Archbishop, Barry Hickey, said that "in addition to its deep spiritual significance, the new Cathedral would be a thing of beauty and a joy for all West Australians."
St Mary’s will officially re-open with a re-dedication on Tuesday December 8 in time for the Christmas season.

What Protects Umbrellas? Dulux Protective Coatings
Umbrellas normally evoke images of shelter and protection against rain. However, a quirky and stunning steel sculpture installed on a roundabout at the intersection of Stanhope Parkway and Conrad Road, in The Ponds estate near Kellyville Ridge in Sydney’s North West, literally turns such images on their heads.
"FLOATS", designed by renowned artists Susan Milne and Greg Stonehouse, resembles a cluster of umbrellas, turned upside down so they open welcomingly toward the sky to catch our precious water. It is s strong statement about our environment and how we have to conserve what we once took for granted.
Milne and Stonehouse collaborated with Vijesh Maharaj, NSW State Manager of Dulux Protective Coatings to provide coating specifications for long term protection of the mild steel installation against corrosion. The coating system also had to provide the aesthetics required for daytime impact and enhance the night-time brilliance of the multicolour lighting system.
"The artists were delighted with the metallic lustre of Ferreko No 3 from an aesthetic point of view, and the micaceous iron oxide pigmentation in the product also offers enhanced corrosion protection", says Vijesh, "so it was an excellent choice of topcoat for this project". Together with Zincanode 402 (zinc rich epoxy primer) which offers exceptional galvanic corrosion protection, we should all enjoy this sculpture for a very long time.
Vijesh Maharaj also provided technical assistance and coatings to the contractors who carried out the coating work, RED Industries.

Dulux Protective Coatings Training Day
A Dulux Protective Coatings Training Day was held in Padstow during September. The group consisted of 3D personnel, Trade Representatives and Dulux Trade Centre staff. It was a full day theory session run by Vijesh Maharaj, Ian Clark and Neal Stewart.
The course covered surface preparation, substrate information, and the correct choice and application of selected protective coatings. Basic corrosion chemistry was presented, with emphasis on the fact that there are several different mechanisms of corrosion, and each requires a different type of corrosion control primer for most effective corrosion prevention.
Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. "This training will definitely help us grow our sales of Dulux Protective Coatings, as we now feel confident in our knowledge of these products."
"Being able to help our customers with their choice of product purchase and give advice on surface preparation and application without having to rely so heavily on our local Protective Coatings Technical Consultants helps save time for both our customers and us."
"I definitely recommend this Training Day for anyone selling, buying or using Protective Coatings. We learned so much today."
If you manage a painting crew, and would like your crew to receive training on use and application of protective coatings, please contact Vijesh for more information.

Rep In Focus
In this Issue, we meet our enthusiastic and hard-working Dulux Protective Coatings Representative, Brendan Lichtendonk, who is based in Launceston, Tasmania.
Hi Brendan.
Q. How would you define your role?
"Busy servicing existing clients and accounts plus looking for new business every day. There are always projects on the go so trying to keep Dulux specified where ever possible keeps me busy. Loads of travelling as I need to cover the whole of Tasmania on my own, its not as small as most people think."
Q. What has been your most interesting job in your current role?
"I think visiting the many different production plants around the state and seeing just how much Tasmania produces and exports to the local, national and international markets."
Q. What do you do to relax?
"Spending time with family, I have two kids who are 4 and 2. I really enjoy playing football (Round ball) and I am heavily involved in a club I co-founded back in 1999 called Northern Rangers. Because I am a goal keeper, on a good day I can relax and play at the same time!"
Q. What is your favourite PC product, and why?
"Durebild STE, because it seems to be a universal product that is going to work on just about anything from steel to concrete. I just had the opportunity to roll out some Luxafloor RollCoat with my Manager Steve Kraljevic and that is a pretty fine product as well."
Q. If you had the opportunity to paint a national icon, what would it be, and with what?
"I would probably paint a shirt and a pair of pants on Warwick Capper, I am sick of seeing that guy walking around half clad and looking at himself in the shop windows. Durebild should do the trick!"
Q. If you were compelled to write an advertising jingle for Dulux Protective Coatings, what would it be?
"That’s a tough one - ah I would have to say ‘Dulux Protective Coatings, Your best Defence against our environments. Durebild – DureSealed!
"
