Solar trees at day and at night.

A Blooming Job for Dulux Protective Coatings

Located in Adelaide Festival Centre Plaza, the Green City Initiatives’ solar powered “Mallee Trees" delight visitors with their elegant curves and quirky use of solar panels as part of the stylish design.

These fantastic street-lights, which are located in the Riverbank precinct near the entrance to the “Artspace”, present excellent examples of contemporary street art during the day, and transform into dazzlingly colourful and functional lighting at night.

According to The Adelaide Festival Centre Annual Report of 2006 - 2007, each solar ‘tree’ is able to produce an average of 864 KWh but only uses 125 KWh of energy per annum. The total annual excess production of 2,217 KWh is returned to the power grid. This saves 1.66 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per annum, equivalent to planting six real trees per month.

To provide protection of the solar trees from corrosion and graffiti, and to enhance both daytime aesthetics and night time drama, the protective coating specification called for a combination of a corrosion control primer (Dulux Durepon P14) and a UV resistant two-pack epoxy acrylic topcoat with a bright metallic sparkle (Acrathane IF in Sparkling Aluminium).

Acrathane IF is often used as a graffiti resistant topcoat in public spaces where an aesthetically pleasing finish is required. Even solvent-borne spray pack graffiti can be quickly and easily removed by Dulux Graffiti Eraser. The high chemical resistance of Acrathane IF ensures that the Mallee Trees remain beautiful and free of defacement by graffiti, as nature had intended.

Acrathane IF Sparking Aluminium owes its brilliant shimmer to the presence of aluminium flake in the formulation, which reflects the sun’s rays.

Malcolm Lunn of Dulux Protective Coatings South Australia is proud to be associated with this high profile and functional public artwork, having provided technical assistance and coatings to the contractors, Able Blasting Contractors.

Dulux Weathermax HBR MIO

Dulux Weathermax HBR MIO

We are excited to release our new micaceous iron oxide topcoat, WEATHERMAX HBR MIO. Until now, micaceous iron oxide finishes were only available in epoxy, alkyd and chlorinated rubber products and were therefore prone to chalking on exterior exposure. New WEATHERMAX HBR MIO however, is a two pack polyurethane, and like WEATHERMAX HBR, has exceptional resistance to chalking, excellent brush loading and very good flow. The high volume solids and rheology profile ensures high film builds with fewer coats. Best of all, the semi gloss finish of WEATHERMAX HBR MIO is resistant to marring as the micaceous iron oxide is encased in polyurethane resin.

Tech Note - Micaceous Iron Oxide Coatings

Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO) is iron oxide in a form that resembles mica, a highly structured, layered mineral. Minerals with this highly layered structure are termed lamellar. When MIO pigments are ground into smaller, finer particles, they tend to cleave along their layers, revealing flat, shiny faces that act like tiny mirrors . These tiny mirrors reflect UV light, protecting the resin from degradation and give the coating an attractive “sparkle”. The lamellar shape also offers additional barrier protection. So, for many reasons, MIO pigment is outstanding for the protection of steel.

Rep In Focus

In This Issue, we meet our dedicated and effervescent Dulux Protective Coatings Marketing Assistant, Judy Knapp, who is based in the Dulux Head Office in Clayton, Victoria.

Hi Judy.

Q. How would you define your role?

"Varied! Marketing is about effective communication with our customers. I’d like to think that we are making information about our Protective Coatings more accessible to those who need it. "

Q. What has been your most interesting job in your current role?

"Our new website! Whilst our previous website worked very well due to it’s simplicity and fast navigation, I thought a Project Gallery would create a visual link between our products and the type of developments they are used on. We were always being asked to supply our colour cards in electronic format too, so now these are also available on our website."

Q. What is your favourite PC product, and why?

"It would have to be Quantum FX! No other product offers steel, aluminium or composite material the high performance protection, graffiti resistance and a brilliant, metallic finish like Quantum FX. "

Q. If you had the opportunity to paint a national icon, what would it be, and with what?

"I would paint Parliament House in Canberra with Quantum FX in FX41/073 (a champagne coloured metallic), and charge people to watch this icon spectacularly reflect the colours of the sun setting!"

Q. What do you do to relax?

"Spending time with my family and enjoying an open fire during cold winter weekends"

Q. If you were compelled to write an advertising jingle for Dulux Protective Coatings, what would it be?

"Add sparkling appeal
To your façade or your steel
Or your giant ferris wheel
Use Quantum – it’s ideal!
Need to see it for real?
Visit our new website for feel! "
